The table below shows the actual number of tribal members graduating each year from 1997-2003. If these numbers represent as many as 40% graduation rate, then as many as 70 students did not graduate in 2003 who should have graduated.

Testing: During the late 1990’s, student competency testing became commonplace across the nation. In 2001, Utah conducted and reported the results of the Utah Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT’s). This testing program is expanding from the elementary grades into the high school grades. Students who are planning to graduate in 2006 or later will be required to pass the Utah Basic Skills Competency Test which has tests in reading, writing, and mathematics. The students will take the test in the spring of their sophomore year. The students will only be allowed to retake any portion of the test 4 times if they do not pass it during their sophomore year.
The results of the 2002 CRT tests in language arts, mathematics, and science are in the tables below. Scores for Native American students are separated out from the state and district results. This allows for an easy comparison to be made between the overall results and the Native American results. Since Todd Elementary (80%) and West Middle (93%) schools’ students are predominantly Ute these school results were separated from the Uintah American Indian results. The Lapoint Elementary School results are also included in these tables, and, with 60% Non-Native American students, their test results align with the overall Uintah School District results. Unfortunately, school results by ethnic background are not readily available.
